📋 What This Guide Covers

  • The correct fresher resume format for India in 2026 — section by section
  • What to put in your resume when you have no work experience
  • How to write resume bullet points that pass ATS and impress recruiters
  • CGPA — when to include it, when to leave it out
  • Real before-and-after examples for every section
  • The most common fresher resume mistakes Indian recruiters flag

The most common question freshers ask about their resume is what to put in the experience section when they have no experience. The answer is that you are asking the wrong question. A fresher resume is not a scaled-down version of an experienced resume. It is a different document built around different assets — your education, your projects, your skills, and your potential. The section headings are similar but what goes inside them is completely different.

This guide covers every section of a fresher resume in the Indian job market, with real examples of what to write and what not to write. The examples are based on what Indian recruiters at BPO, IT services, finance, and core engineering companies actually look for in 2026.

🔍 How This Guide Is Built

Resume advice in this guide is based on published hiring guidelines from Naukri.com, Indeed India, and Internshala (verified June 2026), recruiter feedback from LinkedIn India, and ATS compatibility requirements verified against Naukri, LinkedIn, and standard Indian company portals. The before-and-after examples are constructed from real patterns — not invented.

What you will be able to do after reading: write every section of your fresher resume, understand why each section matters to the ATS and the recruiter, and avoid the mistakes that get resumes rejected before anyone reads them.

📅 Resume format and ATS guidelines verified June 2026. Indian job market data from Naukri.com, Indeed India, Internshala.

The Fresher Resume Format for India — What Goes Where

A fresher resume in India has seven possible sections. Not all are required. The order below is the correct order for a fresher with no work experience. If you have a short internship, it moves ahead of Education.

SectionRequired?LengthWhere it goes
Contact InformationYes — always5 to 6 linesTop of resume
Professional SummaryYes — strongly recommended3 to 4 linesDirectly below contact
EducationYes — always3 to 5 lines per degreeThird section for freshers
ProjectsYes if no internship3 to 5 bullet points per projectFourth section
InternshipsYes if you have one — above Education3 to 5 bullet pointsThird section if present
SkillsYes — always8 to 15 skillsAfter Projects
CertificationsStrongly recommended3 to 6 entriesNear end

💡 One page. No exceptions for freshers.

Every fresher resume should fit on one page. Indian recruiters reviewing hundreds of applications spend 6 to 8 seconds on a first pass. A two-page fresher resume signals either poor editing judgment or padding. If your content exceeds one page, cut it — starting with the oldest and least relevant items. Font size 10 to 11pt, margins 15mm to 20mm, standard fonts only.

Section 1 — Contact Information

Your contact section should be clean, professional, and complete. Indian recruiters specifically look for a professional email address and an active LinkedIn URL. Everything else is optional or should be left out.

✅ What to include

  • Full name — slightly larger font, bold. This is the only formatting flourish that is ATS-safe.
  • Phone number — Indian mobile, with +91 prefix for applications to MNCs
  • Professional email — firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Not nicknames, not college email that expires
  • City, State — Bengaluru, Karnataka. Not your full home address
  • LinkedIn URL — customise it first at linkedin.com/in/yourname
  • GitHub or Portfolio URL — mandatory for tech and design roles, optional for others

⚠ What to leave out of your contact section

  • Date of birth — not required unless specifically asked. Most MNCs and tech companies do not want it
  • Marital status — remove entirely. No Indian company with structured hiring asks for this in 2026
  • Father’s name — leave out unless the application form specifically asks
  • Full postal address — city and state is enough. Full addresses waste space and serve no purpose in initial screening
  • Photo — leave out for tech, finance, and BPO roles. Include only if the job description specifically requests one

Section 2 — Professional Summary

Most freshers write a Career Objective that says something like “I am seeking a challenging position in a dynamic organisation where I can grow.” This tells the recruiter nothing. Replace it with a Professional Summary that tells them exactly who you are, what you can do, and what role you are applying for.

A fresher summary is 3 to 4 lines. It does not need work experience to be strong. It needs specifics.

VersionExampleWhy it works or fails
❌ Weak“Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills and grow professionally.”Says nothing specific. Every fresher writes this. ATS cannot extract any keywords from it.
✅ Strong“B.Com graduate from Christ University Bengaluru (CGPA 8.2) with hands-on experience in Tally ERP and Excel through a 2-month internship at a CA firm. Seeking an Accounts Executive role where I can apply my knowledge of GST filing and financial reconciliation.”Names the degree, institution, CGPA, tools used, internship context, and target role. ATS matches on Tally, Excel, GST, Accounts Executive.
❌ Weak“Hardworking and dedicated team player with good communication skills looking for an opportunity in customer service.”Generic buzzwords. No specifics. ATS scores this very low.
✅ Strong“B.A. Psychology graduate from Bangalore University seeking a Customer Service Executive role. Completed a 3-month internship handling customer queries at an e-commerce firm, maintaining a 94% satisfaction score. Proficient in Zendesk and comfortable with rotational shifts.”Specific role, relevant internship, quantified result, tools named, shift flexibility addressed upfront.

💡 The ATS summary formula for freshers

[Degree] graduate from [Institution] with [specific skill, tool, or experience]. Seeking a [exact job title from the job description] role where I can [what you will contribute]. [One optional line on a key achievement or strength.]

The job title in your summary should match the job description exactly. If the JD says “Customer Service Representative” use that phrase — not “customer support” or “CS role”.

Section 3 — Education

For freshers, Education is your primary credential. List degrees in reverse chronological order — most recent first. For each degree include the degree name and specialisation, institution name, city, month and year of graduation, and your CGPA or percentage.

The CGPA Rule for Indian Resumes

Your CGPA or PercentageWhat to doHow to write it
8.0 and above / 75% and aboveInclude it prominentlyCGPA: 8.4 / 10 or 78%
7.0 to 7.9 / 65% to 74%Include it — it is acceptableCGPA: 7.3 / 10
6.0 to 6.9 / 55% to 64%Include it — omitting raises questionsCGPA: 6.5 / 10
Below 6.0 / Below 55%Include it — do not leave it blankCGPA: 5.8 / 10
Arrears or backlogsDo not mention on resume — disclose if askedList degree and year only

Many freshers ask whether they should omit a low CGPA. The answer is no. An unexplained gap where CGPA should be is more suspicious than a low number. Recruiters at most Indian companies screen for minimum CGPA in the initial filter — typically 6.0 for BPO roles and 6.5 to 7.0 for IT services. If you are below the threshold, your resume may not pass regardless. That is a targeting problem, not a resume problem.

💡 When to add Relevant Coursework under Education

Add a “Relevant Coursework” line under your degree if you studied subjects directly related to the job. A B.Com student applying for a finance role might write: Relevant Coursework: Financial Accounting, Corporate Tax, Cost and Management Accounting. This adds ATS keywords without inventing experience. Keep it to 3 to 5 subjects maximum.

Section 4 — Internships and Projects

This is the section most freshers either skip or fill with vague descriptions. It is also the most important section after Education. Recruiters look here to understand how you applied your knowledge. The format is identical to the Work Experience section in an experienced resume — because internships and projects are your work experience.

How to Write Internship Bullet Points

Every bullet point follows the same formula: Action Verb + What You Did + Quantified Result.

VersionExample bullet pointWhat is wrong or right
❌ Weak“Responsible for handling customer queries”“Responsible for” is passive. No number. No result. ATS cannot score it.
✅ Strong“Resolved 40 to 60 customer queries daily via phone and email, maintaining a first-contact resolution rate of 88%”Action verb: Resolved. Volume: 40 to 60 daily. Channel: phone and email. Result: 88% FCR.
❌ Weak“Assisted with data entry and MIS reports”Vague. What data? What MIS? What volume? What outcome?
✅ Strong“Maintained daily MIS reports tracking 500+ transactions across 3 product categories with 99.8% data accuracy”Specific subject, quantified volume, measurable accuracy.
❌ Weak“Worked on a project about social media marketing”No role, no scope, no result. Could mean anything.
✅ Strong“Designed and executed a 4-week Instagram campaign for a local bakery, growing the account from 320 to 1,100 followers and increasing enquiries by 35%”Duration, platform, scope, starting point, end result, business impact.

How to Write Academic Project Bullet Points

Academic projects with no business outcome are harder to quantify but not impossible. Focus on what you built, what tools you used, and what it demonstrated or achieved — even if the achievement is academic.

✅ Project section template

  • Project Name | Tools Used | Duration
  • Built [what] using [tools] that [did what / achieved what]
  • Reduced / Improved / Achieved [specific metric] by [amount]
  • Presented findings to [audience] — shortlisted for / scored [result] if relevant

💡 What counts as a project for a fresher resume

College mini-projects and major projects both count. So do personal builds — an app you made, a blog you ran, an Excel dashboard you built for your college fest, a social media account you grew. If you did something, built something, or managed something — it belongs here. The question is not “is this professional enough?” The question is “can I describe what I did, what I used, and what happened as a result?”

Section 5 — Skills

The Skills section in a fresher resume serves two purposes. For the ATS, it is a keyword matching zone — the system scans here for exact terms from the job description. For the recruiter, it is a quick scan to confirm you have the tools the role needs.

What to include in your Skills section

Skill typeExamplesInclude?
Technical / Hard SkillsPython, Java, Tally ERP, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Excel, SQL, SalesforceYes — always list these
Domain-specific toolsZendesk, Freshdesk, QuickBooks, SAP, MATLAB, RevitYes — very high ATS value
LanguagesEnglish (fluent), Hindi (native), Kannada (conversational)Yes — important for BPO and customer-facing roles
Generic soft skills“Team player”, “Hard worker”, “Good communicator”No — leave these out. They add no ATS value and recruiters ignore them
Self-rated skillsExcel ⭐⭐⭐⭐ or Excel (Advanced)No — do not self-rate. List the skill and let the interview verify the level
Obvious skillsMS Word, Internet browsing, EmailNo — too basic to list unless applying for a data entry role

💡 The keyword matching trick for freshers

Read the job description line by line. Every tool, technology, methodology, or skill mentioned is a potential keyword. If you have used it — even in a college project or coursework — add it to your Skills section. ATS matches on exact terms. “Customer Relationship Management” and “CRM” are different strings. If the JD says both, include both.

Section 6 — Certifications

Certifications are the fastest way for a fresher to demonstrate initiative and specific knowledge that your degree does not cover. A B.Com graduate with a Google Digital Marketing certification stands out from one without. A B.Tech graduate with an AWS Cloud Practitioner certification adds a verifiable credential that matches directly to job descriptions.

Role you are targetingCertifications that actually matterWhere to get them
IT Services / TechAWS Cloud Practitioner, Google IT Support, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, CompTIA A+Coursera, AWS, Microsoft Learn
Data / AnalyticsGoogle Data Analytics, IBM Data Science, Excel / SQL certificationsCoursera, LinkedIn Learning
Finance / AccountingNPTEL Financial Accounting, Tally certification, GST Practitioner (MSME)NPTEL, Tally Academy
Customer Service / BPOHubSpot Customer Service, Google Customer Service, Zendesk Support AgentHubSpot Academy, Zendesk
Marketing / SalesGoogle Digital Marketing, HubSpot Inbound Marketing, Meta BlueprintGoogle, HubSpot Academy, Meta
Operations / HRSHRM Essentials, Six Sigma Yellow Belt, NPTEL Operations ManagementSHRM, Coursera, NPTEL

List each certification with the name, issuing organisation, and year. If you have a credential ID or a verifiable URL, include it. Recruiters and background verification teams check these.

ATS Formatting Rules for Indian Fresher Resumes

Your resume content can be excellent and still get automatically rejected if the formatting breaks the ATS parser. These are the formatting rules that matter for Indian job portals in 2026.

⚠ Formatting that breaks ATS — avoid all of these

  • Two-column layouts: ATS reads left to right, top to bottom. A two-column resume causes the system to mix your job titles with your skills, producing garbage output
  • Text boxes: Content inside text boxes is completely invisible to ATS parsers. Do not use them for any section
  • Tables in experience sections: Tables break ATS parsing. Using a table to line up job title and date is a common mistake that makes your experience unreadable to the system
  • Graphics and skill bars: Images are ignored by ATS. A skill bar showing “Excel 80%” conveys nothing to the system — and nothing to the recruiter either
  • Headers and footers: Many ATS systems cannot parse text in the header or footer. Keep your name and contact information in the body, not the header section
  • Decorative or condensed fonts: Use Arial, Calibri, or Georgia. Avoid Raleway, Montserrat Condensed, or any font that may not render correctly when the ATS extracts text

✅ Formatting checklist before you submit

  • Single column layout — all content in one vertical flow
  • Font: Arial, Calibri, or Georgia — 10 to 11pt for body, 14 to 16pt for name
  • Margins: 15mm to 20mm on all sides
  • Saved as PDF — named Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf
  • Total length: one page — no exceptions for 0 to 1 year experience
  • No photo unless the job description specifically requests one
  • No date of birth, marital status, or father’s name
  • Professional email address — not your nickname or college email

The Most Common Fresher Resume Mistakes Indian Recruiters Flag

MistakeWhat recruiters seeWhat to do instead
“Responsible for handling customer queries”Passive, vague, no volume or result“Resolved 50+ customer queries daily via phone, maintaining 92% satisfaction”
Career Objective: “seeking a challenging position”Generic — every fresher writes thisProfessional Summary naming specific role, tools, and one achievement
Skills: “Team player, hard worker, good communicator”Buzzwords that add no informationTechnical and domain skills only — tools, platforms, languages

Unprofessional email: coolrahul99@gmail.comImmediate negative impressionfirstname.lastname@gmail.com — create a new one if needed
Photo in resume (unsolicited)Red flag for MNCs and most tech companiesRemove photo unless specifically requested in the JD
Leaving CGPA blankRaises suspicion — recruiter assumes it is very lowAlways include CGPA — even if below 6.0

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a fresher put in a resume when they have no work experience?

Replace the Work Experience section with Internships and Projects. Even a 1-month internship counts as work experience and should be listed first, before Education. Academic projects — college mini-projects, major projects, personal builds — go in a Projects section with the same format as work experience: action verb, what you did, tools used, and result. Certifications, achievements, and extracurricular leadership roles also help fill the resume with relevant content without fabricating experience.

How long should a fresher resume be in India?

One page. No exceptions for 0 to 1 year of experience. Indian recruiters reviewing large volumes of applications spend 6 to 8 seconds on a first pass. A two-page fresher resume signals poor editing judgment. If your content exceeds one page, cut starting with the oldest and least relevant items. Font size 10 to 11pt and margins of 15mm to 20mm will give you enough space for all essential content on one page.

Should a fresher include CGPA on their resume?

Yes, always. Omitting CGPA raises more suspicion than a low CGPA — recruiters assume the worst when it is missing. Include it even if it is below 6.0. Most Indian companies with structured hiring have a minimum CGPA filter, typically 6.0 for BPO and 6.5 to 7.0 for IT services. If you are below the threshold, your resume may not pass the filter regardless — that is a targeting issue, not a resume issue. For CGPA above 8.0, highlight it prominently.

Is a photo required on a fresher resume in India?

No. Omit your photo unless the job description specifically requests one. Most MNCs, tech companies, and BPOs do not want photos because they can introduce unconscious bias into screening. ATS systems also ignore images entirely — a photo on your resume is invisible to the automated screening system. The exception is roles in hospitality, retail, and some customer-facing positions at traditional Indian companies where photos are still sometimes requested.

What is ATS and how does it affect a fresher’s resume?

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. Most companies with structured hiring in India use ATS to automatically scan and score resumes before a human sees them. The system looks for keyword matches between your resume and the job description. Resumes with two-column layouts, text boxes, tables, images, or non-standard fonts often fail parsing and get rejected automatically. A clean single-column resume with standard fonts and keywords from the job description passes ATS reliably and reaches the recruiter.

How do you write a Professional Summary for a fresher resume?

Use this formula: [Degree] graduate from [Institution] with [specific skill, tool, or relevant experience]. Seeking a [exact job title from the JD] where I can [what you contribute]. Name your CGPA if above 7.0, your most relevant tool or subject, and any internship or project. Avoid generic phrases like “seeking a challenging position” or “dynamic organisation”. The summary should be 3 to 4 lines and contain keywords that match the job description.

Which certifications are most valuable for freshers in India?

It depends on your target role. For IT services: Google IT Support, AWS Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. For data roles: Google Data Analytics, IBM Data Science. For finance: NPTEL Financial Accounting, Tally certification, GST Practitioner. For customer service and BPO: HubSpot Customer Service, Zendesk Support Agent certification. For marketing: Google Digital Marketing, HubSpot Inbound, Meta Blueprint. Certifications from recognised platforms (Coursera, NPTEL, Google, Microsoft, HubSpot) carry weight because recruiters and background verification teams can verify them.

Should a fresher use a resume template or build from scratch?

Use a template — but the right kind. Choose a single-column template with no text boxes, no tables in the experience section, and no graphics or skill bars. The resume builder on DecodedCareers produces ATS-safe single-column resumes with three format options. Avoid templates with multiple columns, creative layouts, or heavy graphic design — they look impressive to humans but fail ATS parsing in most Indian company systems.

How should a fresher name their resume PDF file?

Use this format exactly: Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf. For example: Rahul_Sharma_Resume.pdf. Never submit a file named resume.pdf, CV_final.pdf, or CV_v3_updated.pdf. When a recruiter downloads 200 resumes and they all land in the same folder, a properly named file is immediately identifiable. A generic file name is a small detail that signals either carelessness or inexperience — both of which you want to avoid signalling in your first job application.

Can I include college fest and club activities in my fresher resume?

Yes — if they demonstrate a relevant skill or leadership. Organising a college technical fest demonstrates project management and coordination. Leading a debate club demonstrates communication and persuasion. Winning a coding competition demonstrates technical skills under pressure. List these under an Activities or Achievements section at the end. Keep descriptions to one line each with a concrete outcome: “Led a team of 12 students to organise TechFest 2024, attracting 800 attendees across 15 events.” Do not list activities that demonstrate nothing relevant to the role you are applying for.
