💡 Three things most freshers find out after joining

1. CTC and take-home are not the same. Monthly in-hand is typically 65 to 75% of CTC divided by 12. PF, professional tax, and income tax are deducted first.

2. The first two months are often the tightest. Setup costs — deposits, furniture, commute setup — hit immediately. Plan for this.

3. Switching companies after year 1 typically produces a 30 to 50% salary increase. Market data from AmbitionBox and Indeed India — not a recommendation, just what the numbers show.

This is financial information, not financial advice. Every situation is different. The decision is always yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary in India?

CTC (Cost to Company) is everything your employer spends on you — basic salary, HRA, allowances, employer PF (12% of basic), gratuity provision, and variable pay. In-hand is what reaches your bank account after employee PF (12% of basic), professional tax (₹200/month in most states), and income tax are deducted. For most salaried employees in India, in-hand is 65 to 75% of CTC. Under the new regime FY 2026-27, salary up to ₹12.75L gross is effectively zero-tax.

How is freelancer tax calculated under Section 44ADA in India?

Under Section 44ADA, declare 50% of gross receipts as taxable income regardless of actual expenses. If you earn ₹12L, taxable income is ₹6L. Limit is ₹50L (₹75L if 95%+ digital). Advance tax in one instalment by 15 March. File ITR-4 (Sugam). Clients deduct 10% TDS under Section 194J. Source: Income Tax Act Section 44ADA, confirmed FY 2026-27.

New regime or old regime — which is better in FY 2026-27?

For most salaried employees below ₹15L with limited investments, new regime is better. Standard deduction ₹75,000 and zero tax up to ₹12.75L effective. For people with significant 80C, active home loans, and HRA, old regime can save more. Use the salaried mode above to compare both for your exact figures — the calculator shows them side by side.

When does surcharge apply on income tax in India?

Surcharge applies when income exceeds ₹50L. New regime FY 2026-27: 10% above ₹50L, 15% above ₹1Cr, 25% above ₹2Cr (capped at 25%). Old regime: same up to ₹2Cr, then 37% above ₹5Cr. A 4% Health and Education Cess applies on top for everyone. Source: Income Tax Department AY 2026-27.

Does a freelancer or gig worker in India pay PF?

No. PF applies only to employees under the EPF Act. Freelancers do not pay PF. Key obligations are income tax under 44ADA, GST registration if annual receipts exceed ₹20L, and advance tax by 15 March each year.

What is a good first salary for a fresher in India in 2026?

National median fresher salary across all industries is ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 LPA (AmbitionBox, Indeed India — June 2026). IT services floor is ₹3.5L. BPO national average is ₹3.4L. Finance metro roles average ₹3.9L to ₹4.5L. Use the First Salary Planner to see what your specific offer means in your city and living situation — the numbers are yours to interpret.

What is professional tax and how much is it?

Professional tax is a state-level tax on employment income. Most major states charge ₹200/month (₹2,400/year). Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal levy this. Delhi, Rajasthan, and UP do not. This calculator uses ₹200/month as standard — your actual deduction may differ by state.

How do ESOPs get taxed in India?

ESOPs are taxed at two points. At exercise: the difference between FMV and exercise price is a perquisite under Section 17(2), taxed as salary at your marginal rate. At sale: capital gains — STCG 20% under 12 months, LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25L for listed shares over 12 months (Budget 2025). Startup ESOPs can defer perquisite tax under Section 17(2)(vi). Consult a CA for ESOP planning.

What is the GST threshold for freelancers in India?

Register for GST if annual receipts exceed ₹20L for services. Charge 18% GST on most professional services, file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. GST collected is not your income — it passes through to the government. Income tax under 44ADA is on receipts excluding GST. Source: CGST Act, FY 2026-27.

How much can salary increase by switching companies in India?

Annual increments average 8 to 10% per year (Aon India 2026 Salary Survey). A lateral move typically produces a 30 to 50% salary increase. This is market data from AmbitionBox and Indeed India — not a recommendation to leave any employer. The market verdict in the Salaried mode shows whether your current offer has room to negotiate before you even join.
